Take a look at one of your essays – and if you can, take a look at a friend’s essays as well, so that you can see the differences between your styles.

Try to work out how you tend to write. For example, is your essay full of long, involved sentences, with each sentence getting longer and longer as you think of more aspects; or is it characterised by a series of short sentences of the ‘Dog bites man’ type?

How flexible is your use of verb forms? How varied is your vocabulary? Do you repeatedly use the same words?

How do you use paragraphs (do you use paragraphs at all)?

And, most importantly, to what extent does your use of vocabulary, paragraphs and grammar reflect – or fail to reflect – your thoughts on the subject, and the argument you want to communicate?
