Careers in English

What sort of careers can English degrees lead to?

My parents were really worried when I said I wanted to study English at university – they thought I’d never get a job and get into massive debt for nothing.
They wanted me to study maths instead – so I could get a good job in IT when I finished. After a lot of arguments, I studied English anyway – and I still got a job in computing!
The real answer is that they could lead to almost anything – English graduates go on to careers in accountancy and IT, for example, as much as careers in management and business.

Every year, thousands of employers visit universities throughout the country to recruit students as they finish their degrees – and the majority of them are delighted to interview English students (just to check, we went round and asked them all…)
