Holy Innocents Image 238 From the Queen Mary Psalter of 1310-20 (on this MS, see Image 247). Herod is seated at the centre of the scene, with one leg crossed over another in the traditional posture of authority. He is in the act of drawing a long sword. Above him a devil. To either side, knights in mail armour push aside the kneeling mothers in order to butcher their infants. In the niches are six figures of prophets.
