Pentecost Image 126 Page for Whit Sunday or Pentecost from the lavishly illustrated Sherborne Missal, made c.1396-1407 for the Benedictine abbey of Sherborne (Dorset). In the large initial: The Virgin Mary sits in the middle of the assembled Apostles as the dove of the Holy Ghost descends upon them. In the smaller initial below: John of the Book of Revelation before a tower and six smaller churches, with angels of the seven churches of Asia. In the initial 'I' below, St Paul with sword and books. In the niche to the left, below the canopy, John of Revelation, between several lighted candles, prostrate before the Apocalyptic Son of Man, with two swords at his mouth. In the architectural canopy above, beneath seven lighted lamps, God the Father, with orb, blessing. Flanking the column below: portrait of Bishop Mitford of Salisbury and Abbot Bruyning of Sherborne, joint patrons of the MS. The medallions in the borders display illustrations of the Apocalypse and Gifts of the Holy Ghost. back to previous page
