Abraham and Isaac

Image 237 A page from the Queen Mary Psalter of 1310-1320 (on this MS see Image 247). The top half of the image shows Isaac carrying the wood as he follows his father to the place of sacrifice (a traditional prefiguration of Christ carrying his cross to Calvary). The lower half represents the drama of the angel's intervention as Abraham is about to sacrifice a compliant Isaac. The sheep that will be substituted for Isaac is also shown. The French caption (above) reads: 'Then Abraham took his son, whom he loved well, and that which the angel commanded him. Then says [Isaac] to his father: "Where are you going?" "Come on and you'll find out". "I carry the bundle of firewood and you the sword - there is no other person around" '. The caption below reads: 'Here Abraham acts openly; his son comes all meekly. High he raises his sword. " Let be!" cries the angel "and take this sheep ---". Warner 1912, p.60
