Annunciation to the Shepherds

Image 275 Miniature preceding the office of Tierce from a book of hours written in Flanders c. 1500 and decorated by a group of artists known under the collective name of 'The Master of the Prayer Books'. Traditionally known as The Hours of Isabella of Aragon, but there is no evidence of her ownership. Like other miniatures in this manuscript, the picture is framed by a wide border of flowers, foliage and birds. The Annunciation is depicted against a North European farming landscape, fenced and wooded. The shepherds are depicted with dog and bagpipes, their music interrupted by the angel. The shepherdess, engaged in winding wool, looks out of the picture away from the angel.
