Garden of Eden: Temptation Image 347 Once a complete scheme for the whole church interior, the wall-paintings at Hardham cover both nave and chancel, but apparently were covered up by the 13th century and undiscovered until 1866. The cycle dates from c.1120-40. In this Temptation scene, the elongated figures of Adam and Eve - with their diagrammatically-delineated bellies and buttocks - are both to the right of the tree, which contains the serpent, now faint. back to previous page
