Death, Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin Mary

Image 399 A page from the 12th-century York Psalter, produced in the north of England c.1170 in an angular, stylized but vigorous English Romanesque. Above, as the body of Mary is laid to rest in the tomb angels swoop down swinging censers. Below, the Virgin Mary is assumed bodily into heaven, but here, in a striking image, her body is borne up by angels still facelessly shrouded in its winding sheet.
