Borders and Margins Image 652 (This image by courtesy of Sotheby's) From the recently rediscovered Macclesfield Psalter (c.1320-30), probably from Gorleston, Norfolk, and closely related to the Gorleston Psalter. This image continues the story begun in the lower border on the previous leaf of the manuscript (see image number 647), and depicts the funeral of the rabbit killed whilst jousting. The procession is led by a rabbit ringing two bells, followed by two rabbits bearing the coffin of the deceased on a litter covered with a striped cloth. bringing up the rear, a rabbit is clad in clerical robes carries an aspersorium (receptacle for holy water) and an aspergillum. back to previous page
