Dr Edward Wilson-Lee is at the Ways with Words Literary Festival at Dartington Hall on 13 July to talk about The Bard in Africa.

Shakespeare’s plays were carried into the lake regions of Africa by Burton and Stanley; performed in Mombasa by travelling Indian troupes; read by boy soldiers in the Sudanese civil wars. Dr Wilson-Lee relates his adventures in East Africa in search of an answer to why Shakespeare should be so adored – in the most unlikely of places.
