The Spenser Review

Edited by Sheila Cavanagh

About the Spenser Review
The Spenser Review is published three times a year--Winter, Spring-Summer, and Autumn--with support from the International Spenser Society and assistance from Emory University. The editor, Sheila Cavanagh, solicits letters containing news of any sort which would interest Spenserians, and hopes to print any legitimate inquiry. She also solicits abstracts and/or offprints of articles, receipt of which will reduce the time between the article's publication and the news of it.

The Spenser Review was founded in 1969-70 by Elizabeth Bieman and A. Kent Hieatt, and was originally published from the University of Western Ontario, with the endorsement of the Renaissance Society of America. Until 2001 its title was Spenser Newsletter. Its aim has always been to provide reviews and notices of books, abstracts and notices of articles, and news of conferences. It has always included:

  • special news on major events like the publication of new editions of Spenser's work and special conferences
  • reports on events from Spenser at Kalamazoo and Spenser at MLA
  • minutes and news from the annual MLA meeting of the Spenser Society
  • a yearly list of Spenser Society members
  • a yearly bibliographical update of work on Spenser. This bibliography has been estimated to surpass by 50% to 100% the number of entries offered by the next-best bibliography, the MLA's.
At certain times the Review has also reported on finished dissertations and work in progress. Even in its first year, it was announcing that it would enlarge certain issues in order to keep pace with the expanding amount of work on Spenser. Subsequent editors have covered expansions involving Spenserian work in other countries, most recently crucial work in Japan and Ireland; changes in information technology, now including electronic journals and mailing lists; creative work in fiction, drama, and verse about Spenser. The Spenser Review does not evaluate or print scholarly articles; for that go to Spenser Studies: A Renaissance Poetry Annual.

Following an eighteen-month rolling bar, bibliographies, abstracts, and reviews from back issues of The Spenser Newsletter and The Spenser Review are available in a searchable format from Donald Stump's Edmund Spenser World Bibliography. New members, in particular, may like to consult older issues of the Newsletter/Review in this searchable, electronic format.
