Isabel MacCaffrey Prize 2020

Isabel MacCaffrey Prize 2020

The winner of the 2020 Isabel MacCaffrey Prize was Hazel Wilkinson, for Edmund Spenser and the Eighteenth-Century Book (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2017).

The judges were unanimous in their decision and found the  book to be a ‘well written, original and deeply engaging study’,  which shows how ‘eighteenth-century writers received Spenser as a variety of totem-book – frequently un- or under-read but very much part of their conversation’. The book is the first reception history / story for Spenser in the eighteenth century, and, the judges note that they especially liked the way the book begins by facing Spenser’s “unreadability” squarely as a facet of book history / reception.
