Using ICT in the English Classroom 2

Using ICT in the English Classroom

by Craig Morrison, Head of English and Drama, Parkside Community College, Cambridge

Using ICT in the classroom allows everyone to learn with real pace, and with a vast
array of resources to hand via the internet. In terms of English teaching, technology
gives students the tools with which to transform texts, to edit and share ideas with ease.
Also, it lets us experiment with new media – digital video, webpages and multimedia
presentations – in the classroom, working together with (rather than against) already
successful practice.

The future of education in my eyes lies in knowledge sharing: free, easily accessible
and rich sources available online, that can be of equal use to the home learner, the adult
seeking a new direction, or a class of school-age children. Bringing learning communities
together, through technology, has to be the real aim. Converse represents an important
step in this direction; it gives an open audience access to rich materials, and
critical voices.
