What do books tell us about themselves? How do we 'read' qualities like size and shape? Come and learn how to analyze books as objects as well as texts.
Through interactive presentations, games and quizzes, this session will introduce older children and teens to the study of the book as object. Drawing on the university's collections, including some rare early American imprints, we will think about the shape and form that books have historically taken: large and small, thick and thin, alone and bound together, e-copies and print. We will think about the life stories of books from publication to the library shelf. And through examples of some GCSE/A level texts, we will ask how the presentation of books affects our reading of them.
