15:00 - 15:30
GR06/07 - ground floor, Faculty of English
Do respectable women have to look a certain way? This talk explores the medieval roots of stereotypes about makeup and dress that still affect women today. Through stories about holy and 'wicked' women from early medieval Europe, Alexandra Zhirnova explains how the medieval church's ideas about modesty and appearance became a lasting barrier for women's access to power.
