A look at an extremely imaginative way of interpreting the Bible which was common in the Middle Ages, and which in Bede's skilled hands found hidden meaning in every word.
In 716 Bede was finishing the longest of all his Bible commentaries, on the Book of Samuel. It covers some famous Old Testament stories like David's killing of Goliath. As well as being his longest, it is his hardest and in many ways most daring, and even in places his strangest work for the extreme lengths he goes to read Jesus into every verse.
