The CMT is of course, studiedly neutral on matters political–but on the day of the big Commons vote it’s perhaps appropriate to observe that the recent UK protests over tuition fees have led to the creation of some wonderful material texts. Here is one home-made placard which epitomizes the wit and anger that we’ve seen on the streets in the last few weeks…

    This image reminds me of the discussion at the seminar in the History of Material Texts last February, at which the designer Kit Grover displayed some of his witty Shakespeare-themed souvenirs for the RSC. One was a white t-shirt with nothing but a blood-stain on it. That seemed like an extremely difficult allusion, but this placard suggests that some people would get it and could make equally cunning allusions to the plot.
