A performance followed by a discussion with Jay Bernard.
Elaine Mitchener is a British Afro-Caribbean vocalist, movement artist and composer working between contemporary/experimental new music, free improvisation and visual art. Her work is challenging and direct, bringing a subtle London edge to Black avant-garde traditions stemming from Europe, the Caribbean and America. Core to her performance is a commitment to poetry, a complex sonic engagement with writers such as N.H Pritchard, Edward Kamau Brathwaite, Una Marson and Aime Cesaire. Mitchener has collaborated with musicians and artists such as Sonia Boyce, The Otolith Collective, Moor Mother and George E Lewis, and is co-founder of the Rolling Calf trio. Her first album Solo Throat was released in 2024.
Elaine Mitchener will be running a workshop facilitated by the Music Faculty on December 2nd; this will be an opportunity to see her perform.
