Faculty of English Outreach Activity, Michaelmas Term 2023

This term the Faculty has run 2 online outreach lectures to give Year 12 students the opportunity to find out more about the course and what it is like to study at Cambridge. The first saw over 130 students listen to Prof Drew Milne give an introduction to Practical Criticism followed by a session on Careers with an English degree where they heard 4 members of the alumni talk about their varied experiences in law, TV production, computer game design and on a graduate business scheme and how the degree had helped them as they progress in their careers. The following week 190 students listened to Prof Raphael Lyne talk about “Fast and Slow Thinking in Shakespeare” before Dr Amy Morris gave them an insight into the course and the application process. Thank you to all the speakers for contributing to these events.
On Monday 4th December we are joining forces with Classics, Divinity and MMLL to give 200 Year 12 students currently thinking about university options an experience of being at Cambridge.  They will each attend 3 taster lectures, have a quick tour of a college, a chance to visit the EFL and will attend sessions on studying here, careers options for humanities graduates, how to make the most of super curricular opportunities and finally have the chance to hear from some current students. Huge thanks to Prof Richard Dance and to Dr Jess Cotton for each delivering 2 lectures at what is a very busy time.
