The Faculty of English is proud to congratulate and support Ally Louks, one of our PhD students, who passed her viva last week with no corrections. Her thesis ‘Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose’ studies how literature registers the importance of olfactory discourse – the language of smell and the olfactory imagination it creates – in structuring our social world.
Dr Louks has managed abhorrent attacks on social media with aplomb. We are glad that there has been an exceptional outpouring of support for her and for the intellectual freedom and rigour that is essential to academia and evident in her thesis.
