SILVIA Dost thou know her?
JULIA Almost as well as I do know myself.
To think upon her woes I do protest
That I have wept a hundred several times.
SILVIA Belike she thinks that Proteus hath forsook her?
JULIA I think she doth, and that’s her cause of sorrow. (4.4.128-133)
Dost thou know her, do you actually know her? asks Silvia, in amazement. Oh yes, OH yes, says Julia, bitterly? wistfully? Almost as well as I do know myself. Yeah, I’d say I know Julia pretty well. And to think upon her woes I do protest that I have wept a hundred several times. And I feel really sorry for her? when I think about everything she’s gone through, how much she’s suffered—continues to suffer—it’s made me cry, really cry for her. Belike she thinks that Proteus hath forsook her? Do you think, then, that she thinks that Proteus has abandoned her, rejected her, chucked her? Pause. I think she doth. Yes. Yes. That’s what she thinks. And that’s her cause of sorrow. That’s why she’s so upset. Yeah.
