Health and Safety Information for the Faculty of English

  • First Aid boxes are located beside each of the tea points and in the ground-floor office.
  • A list of the Sidgwick Site First Aiders is attached to each First Aid box and is also available in the ground-floor office.
  • All accidents and ‘near misses’ must be reported to the Safety Officer (Vicky Aldred, Room FR23, first floor).

Fire Safety

  • Fire Notices are posted in each room, explaining what to do in the event of a fire and showing the nearest escape route. Escape routes are also indicated by the green notices in the corridor.
  • Please ensure that you are familiar with the escape route from each room.
  • Please let us know of any accessibility requirements in advance, so that we can adjust room bookings accordingly.
  • The lift will not work during a fire alarm. If any of your group are unable to evacuate via the stairs, please escort them to one of the refuge points on each floor and press the alarm button. You should then leave the building and ask the Fire Wardens to help with the evacuation.
  • If you would prefer to book a ground-floor room, please let our receptionist know.
  • The assembly point is the cycle rack in front of the Faculty of History.
  • The Fire Alarm is tested every Friday morning before 9.00am. Notices will be displayed at the main entrance to remind you. If the alarm sounds at any other time the building must be evacuated.
  • Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the Faculty Building.
