Information for Prospective Postgraduate Students

We are pleased that you are considering the Faculty of English at the University of Cambridge for your postgraduate studies. We provide opportunities for outstanding postgraduate study in all areas of English Literature. As a postgraduate student here, you can expect to be in regular contact with acknowledged authorities in your chosen field, and to have access to research resources which are among the best in the world. We usually admit around one hundred postgraduate students each year. Our large and lively postgraduate community is an essential part of the Faculty’s social and intellectual life.

Our graduate teaching and supervision is research-led by scholars at the forefront of their fields, and our postgraduate students have all the outstanding resources available across the University, from its many libraries to a wealth of research seminars hosted by faculties, departments and research centres.

The Cambridge University Library is one of only three copyright libraries in England. It can be relied upon to contain the vast majority of twentieth-century printed materials on most topics, and it has excellent collections of printed books and manuscripts from earlier periods. It also subscribes to a large number of electronic journals and databases which are available to all students in the University.

Cambridge provides everything necessary to make your time as a postgraduate student the most enjoyable period of your education. What you need to bring is your energy: energy to push your work forward, to seek friendship and intellectual sustenance in the rich environment of the University and its colleges, and to make full use of the resources that will allow you to realise your aims for the future. Formal detailed information about the structure of courses provided by the Faculty can be found in the Postgraduate Prospectus.

These Faculty pages provide supplementary informal information. Please do familiarise yourself with them before making an application. When you are ready to do so, you can access the online application form at the Postgraduate Admissions website.
