Dr Olivia Krauze’s essay ‘What is a Violent Emotion?’, which won the Hamilton Prize in 2024, was published in issue 50.2 of Victorian Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Victorian Studies.
The article illuminates an important yet overlooked sub-history of emotion in the nineteenth century: the development of “violent emotion” as a category of intense emotional experience, in order to account for the special relationship between violence, emotion, and narrative in the period.
