Julia: Proteus will be THRILLED to see me; Lucetta: mmmmm (2.7.63-71) #2Dudes1Dog #SlowShakespeare

JULIA              Nay, that I will not.

LUCETTA        Then never dream on infamy, but go.

If Proteus like your journey when you come,

No matter who’s displeased when you are gone.

I fear me he will scarce be pleased withal.

JULIA That is the least, Lucetta, of my fear.

A thousand oaths, an ocean of his tears,

And instances of infinite of love

Warrant me welcome to my Proteus.         (2.7.63-71)

Nay, that I will not, protests Julia: I’m definitely going, nothing can stop me! Well, if your mind’s made up, retorts Lucetta, then there’s no point in fretting about your reputation: then never dream on infamy, but go. Just do it! All that matters is that Proteus will be thrilled to see you, and if Proteus like your journey when you come, no matter who’s displeased when you are gone. He’s the only one whose opinion you care about, right? It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of you! But then a more sober note of caution, a proper warning from a woman who is perhaps more experienced and worldly, or at least more cynical: I fear me he will scarce be pleased withal. Have you thought about that? What if he’s not pleased to see you? What if he’s dismayed, taken aback, or simply indifferent? But Julia’s unstoppable in her faithful optimism: that is the least, Lucetta, of my fear. I’m not concerned in the slightest, the possibility doesn’t even register! After all, a thousand oaths, an ocean of his tears, and instances of infinite of love warrant me welcome to my Proteus! He’s sworn his devotion to me so passionately, wept so bitterly at our parting, and given so many signs of how much he adores me—how could he not be pleased to see me? Unthinkable! He’ll be THRILLED!
