FLUTE Most radiant Pyramus, most lily-white of hue,
Of colour like the red rose on triumphant brier,
Most brisky juvenal, and eke most lovely jew,
As true as truest horse that yet would never tire,
I’ll meet thee, Pyramus, at Ninny’s tomb.
QUINCE Ninus’ tomb, man. Why, you must not speak that yet. That you answer to Pyramus. You speak all your part at once, cues and all. Pyramus, enter; your cue is past. It is ‘never tire’.
FLUTE O!
As true as truest horse, that yet would never tire. (3.1.88-98)
Flute has been going over and OVER his lines and now they just pour out of him, all at once: Most radiant Pyramus, most lily-white of hue, of colour like the red rose on triumphant brier, most brisky juvenal, and eke most lovely jew, going to stop you there for a bit, Thisbe/Flute, to note that Pyramus sounds like a beautiful lady, sort of, in the comparisons to lilies and roses (albeit on the humble brier), a lively young man, and a lovely jew, incomprehensibly, because Quince isn’t going to sacrifice hue for anyone and that’s the only rhyme he can come up with. As true as truest horse that yet would never tire—like the BEST horse!—I’ll meet thee, Pyramus, at Ninny’s tomb. Flute draws breath, looks for approval, with desperation or defiance. Quince also draws breath, perhaps, calm, calm, perhaps he should have done some basic comprehension checks before starting (where to start?): Ninus’ tomb, man. (You NINNY.) Why, you must not speak that yet! That comes later, that you answer to Pyramus. You speak all your part at once, cues and all, but it’s DIALOGUE, it’s a CONVERSATION, you’ve got to wait for Pyramus to reply! Back in control, albeit with frustration: Pyramus, enter; your cue is past. It is ‘never tire’. Where have you got to, man, keep up!? O! says Flute, comprehension dawning (perhaps), and also deflation and disappointment, he did exactly what he was asked to do, he learned his lines and he delivered them, all of them, all at once. But he’ll go again: as true as truest horse, that yet would never tire.
But where is Pyramus? Where is BOTTOM?
