[Enter LYSANDER.]
LYSANDER He goes before me, and still dares me on;
When I come where he calls, then he is gone.
The villain is much lighter heeled than I:
I followed fast, but faster he did fly,
That fallen am I in dark uneven way,
And here will rest me. Come, thou gentle day,
For if but once thou show me thy gray light,
I’ll find Demetrius, and revenge this spite. [Sleeps.] (3.2.413-420)
Lysander has had ENOUGH, he’s so confused. (They’ve been in the forest for hours and not only did he fail to bring a map, he also didn’t pack snacks or a drink.) And now he’s chasing after Demetrius (or so he thinks; it’s Puck) who is leading him in all directions but remains unseen, taunting him all the while. He goes before me, and still dares me on; when I come where he calls, then he is gone. I don’t understand! Where IS he? Is it just that he can run faster? The villain is much lighter heeled than I: I followed fast, but faster he did fly. He’s given me the slip, the slippery bastard. That fallen am I in dark uneven way, now I think I’ve done my ankle, and my good trousers that I put on for eloping, they’re ruined, and I seem to have lost my romantic hero shirt too. I’m DONE, and here will rest me. Just for a bit? Get my breath back? I’m not letting Demetrius off the hook, though, I’m still going to defend my honour. Later. Come, thou gentle day, for it but once thou show me thy gray light, I’ll find Demetrius, and revenge this spite. As soon as it’s light, I’m AFTER that bastard again, I’ll show him who’s the better man. Small nap first though.
