Bamako (2006)

by Abderrahmane Sissako

Bamako is an imaginative indictment of post-colonial economic policies in Africa. The film depicts a mock trial taking place in the courtyard of a house in Bamako, the capital of Mali: the people of Africa versus the IMF and the World Bank. As these proceedings reveal the crippling economic legacies of colonialism and the IMF’s restructuring programmes, the film also follows a young couple – Mélé, a nightclub singer, and Chaka, who’s unemployed and unhappy.”
