HAMLET What man dost thou dig it for?
GRAVEDIGGER For no man, sir.
HAMLET What woman, then?
GRAVEDIGGER For none, neither.
HAMLET Who is to be buried in’t?
GRAVEDIGGER One that was a woman, sir, but rest her soul she’s dead. (5.1.122-128)
More logic; Hamlet does actually want to know whose grave it is, although he seems to be enjoying the quibbling too. What man dost thou dig it for?—perhaps a more direct, closed question will elicit the information? For no man, sir. Definite, polite, a simple answer to a simple question. Hamlet thinks he’s cracked it: what woman, then? (The audience hold their breath.) For none, neither. Definite, again. A different angle, exasperation starting: who is to be buried in’t?And this seems to get somewhere, and will also get a laugh: one that was a woman, sir, but rest her soul she’s dead. Boom boom, but also: when is it finally going to be revealed, whose grave this is?
